About George Sommers
George Sommers is a highly respected civil rights and constitutional law litigator, and has been lead class action counsel in numerous such lawsuits, going back over 30 years. See, e.g., Loner v. New York City Police Department, 802 F.Supp. 1029 (1992), aff'd, 999 F.2d 699 (1993). His successes in civil rights and constitutional law litigation have been the subject of numerous law review notes and commentary, including in the “Harvard Law Review,” and the basis for several moot court competitions, including at the Yale Law School. His areas of practice also include plaintiffs personal injury, commercial and employment litigation.
Mr. Sommers started his legal career at New York University Law School, where he was the Seidler Scholar, based on academic performance, receiving a full scholarship. As a law student, he received several awards, was invited to join two law reviews, was the student representative to the Executive Committee of NYU Law School, his second and third years, and participated in the Southern District of New York Litigation Training Program.
Upon graduation, Mr. Sommers joined the Wall Street law firm of Sullivan and Cromwell, where he was a civil litigator, and gained substantial experience in international litigation. Thereafter, he started his own firm, with offices in New York City, Hoboken, New Jersey (where he was President of the Hoboken Bar Association), and most recently Newark, New Jersey. He has been trying cases for over 30 years in the federal and state courts of New York and New Jersey. He has been recognized in Marquis “Who’s Who in American Law” since 1996, and has been recognized in Marquis “Who’s Who in the World” since 2008. He is a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from Martindale-Hubbell.
